T-M Selected Cells

This section of the thalamus-midbrain junction contains two more important nuclei of the thalamus: the medial and lateral geniculate nuclei. (Geniculate, is from the Latin for 'knee'.) The lateral geniculate nucleus relays information to the visual cortex, and the medial geniculate nucleus relays information to the auditory cortex. The hippocampus (from the Greek for 'seahorse') borders the the lateral ventricle of the temporal lobe and plays important roles in learning and memory, and the relief of stress.
